Targeting Bill Clinton – It didn’t work in 1998

  • 10:10 pm Friday, September 30th, 2016 by Jamie Dupree

With all of the talk from Donald Trump and other Republicans in recent days about the idea of taking aim at Bill Clinton’s infidelity as a way to undermine the White House bid of his wife Hillary Clinton, a look back at the mid-term election of 1998 might offer a bit of a cautionary tale for the GOP.

It didn’t work.

1998 was dominated by the investigation of Clinton and his relationship with Monica Lewinsky, which exploded on to the Drudge Report on January 19 of that year, starting months of explosive political battles.

Expanding his attack on Hillary Clinton over the investigation into the private email server she used while serving as Secretary of State, Donald Trump on Friday demanded that President Obama publicly say that he would not grant a pardon to Clinton before leaving office.

“Mr. President, will you pledge not to issue a pardon to Hillary Clinton and her co-conspirators, for their many crimes against our country and against society itself – will you make that pledge?” Trump said to big cheers at a rally in Novi, Michigan.

Clinton changes tactics, hits Trump in Florida

  • 4:36 pm Friday, September 30th, 2016 by Jamie Dupree

After spending much of the week focusing more on her own election plans, Hillary Clinton switched gears and ratcheted up her attacks on Donald Trump, using his early morning Twitter salvos against a former Miss Universe to argue that the Republican nominee is not worthy of the job of President of the United States.

“Who gets up at 3 o’clock in the morning, to engage in a Twitter attack against a former Miss Universe?” Clinton asked with an incredulous note in her voice.

“He hurled as many insults as he could – really, why does he do things like that?” Clinton asked.

Clinton labels Trump “unhinged”

  • 1:41 pm Friday, September 30th, 2016 by Jamie Dupree

Hours after Donald Trump used a series of tweets to attack a former Miss Universe, Hillary Clinton labeled the GOP nominee “unhinged” over his early morning social media jabs, as Clinton allies said it was more evidence that Trump could be easily baited and distracted as President.

“What kind of man stays up all night to smear a woman with lies and conspiracy theories?” Clinton said on Twitter.

“When something gets under Donald’s thin skin, he lashes out and can’t let go. This is dangerous for a president,” Clinton added, as her Democratic supporters drove home that message.

In a series of early morning tweets, Donald Trump fanned the flames on a dispute with a former Miss Universe, as Trump claimed the existence of a “sex tape” involving Alicia Machado, who has joined in Hillary Clinton’s attacks against Trump since being mentioned in Monday’s debate at Hofstra University.

“Crooked Hillary was duped and used by my worst Miss U,” Trump tweeted, as he sent out four tweets between 3 am and 5 am on Friday morning.

“Anytime you see a story about me or my campaign saying “sources said,” DO NOT believe it,” Trump added.

Trump makes bid for New Hampshire

  • 4:13 pm Thursday, September 29th, 2016 by Jamie Dupree

Trying to bring back the magic of his resounding Republican primary victory earlier this year, Donald Trump rallied supporters in New Hampshire today, urging voters to reject Hillary Clinton’s bid for the White House in November.

“Hillary Clinton has been a disaster,” Trump said, as he repeated his familiar refrain, arguing that Clinton has little to show for her years in public service.

“She’s been there for 30 years and has never done anything for you or your family,” as he accused Clinton of focusing only on “small and petty distractions” in her campaign.

“Are you ready to go to the polls?” Clinton asked to cheers, as she reminded voters they can cast their vote.

Clinton pointed out a 103 year old woman who had come to the rally, and was ready to cast her ballot.

Congress leaves town for the elections

  • 3:35 am Thursday, September 29th, 2016 by Jamie Dupree

Backing away from any budget showdown that might trigger a government shutdown at the end of this week, lawmakers in the House and Senate are headed home now until after the elections, as Congress on Wednesday approved a stop gap budget to keep Uncle Sam operating through early December.

The plan includes $1.1 billion to address the Zika virus, which lawmakers from Florida had been demanding for weeks.

“The Zika outbreak is a public health issue, not a political one,” said Rep. David Jolly (R-FL).

“Congress tonight did the right thing,” Jolly added.

Trump steps up attacks on Clinton

  • 9:32 pm Wednesday, September 28th, 2016 by Jamie Dupree

In the aftermath of Monday’s first debate with Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump on Wednesday turned up his attacks on the Democratic Party nominee, labeling Clinton “incompetent” and a “liar,” arguing that she has “failed at everything” in her political career.

“Hillary Clinton is incompetent, I really believe that,” Trump told a rally in Council Bluffs, Iowa. “I’m telling you, she is incompetent,” as he spent almost the first 30 minutes of his Iowa speech attacking Clinton in a variety of ways.

“How can Hillary Clinton try to lead this country when she has such a low opinion of its citizens?” Trump [More]
